Sad Little Garden

Before I forget

There’s a new gardening segment on one of my favourite radio shows. Simon Morton has been keeping bees and chickens in his backyard for a while but now he’s put in a new vege patch. Photos and podcasts from the earlier shows are here.

  1. Hi A, I was quite enjoying your comment about making decisions on what to plant while standing in front of the seedlings at the supermarket. That’s me! My garden is flourishing despite the lack of planning, but I think I took it a bit too far when I threw in my scarlet runner beans any-old-where despite the fact that they actually last 4 years. I think I will end up moving my chickens over them long before 4 years are up!

By the way, something I have always wondered about bokashi is, does it cause aerobic or anaerobic decomposition? Because, you know, if it’s anaerobic, it’s causing 23 times as much climate change with all that nasty methane. I’ve been wondering because it seems like quite a closed system to me – not sure how it would get enough oxygen for aerobic decomposition? (Might go off and google it myself actually.)

    • Ah bollocks! Don’t tell me that! Now I have to google too! LOL

I wouldn’t have thought it caused anaerobic decomposition. When it’s in the bucket it’s pickling rather than decomposing and once it’s in the soil it’s dug into the soil – that is, it’s mixed with soil at the bottom of the trench and although soil is then put over it it’s certainly not airtight. I’ve noticed that the patches where I’ve dug it in are very “active” in terms of worms and ants etc. And it’s definitely broken down in the soil very quickly…

Hmmmm but now you’ve made me worry – and you know I *really* don’t need anything else to worry about ha ha! But all is not lost. If it turns out that the system is creating huge methane emissions then the buckets will convert nicely to under-bench worm farms.
